The Cobain
It's better to burn out than fade away.
As the lead singer and frontman for one of the most influential yet short-lived bands of the late twentieth century, Nirvana, Kurt Cobain is definitive of the reluctant icon archetype. Catapulted into life as an unofficial spokesperson for all of Generation X, it's nigh impossible to consider the grunge rock movement as a whole without focusing on Nirvana - and its dark yet ragingly charismatic lead vocalist - in particular.
As a child, Cobain's bedroom is said to have seemed more like a chaotic art studio than anything else, and from a very early age he took to music, singing and playing the piano. Growing into an adolescent, Cobain became moody, withdrawn, and insubordinate to authority figures, the beginnings of the attitude that would one day make him the darling of countercultures everywhere.
Nirvana's style relied on jarringly sharp contrasts for the deeply effective impact they were so well loved by their fans for. Nirvana's songs characteristically juxtaposed somber, melancholic verses against jarring, loud and raging choruses that had Cobain screaming out his heart and soul to the electric energy of his and his bandmates' instruments.
Offstage, Cobain's personal life garnered him as much attention as his music; publicly outspoken on issues of social justice and equality, Cobain also struggled with substance abuse and frequently found himself entering treatment centers. Cobain eventually married fellow rocker Courtney Love in one of rock & roll's most often cited relationship train-wrecks. His depression, addictions, chaotic lifestyle, and the stress of his ever growing status culminated in his death by suicide at the age of 27, just as his fame and status reached a global crescendo.
Nirvana and their legendary lead Cobain remain one of rock & roll's most beloved symbols of cultural opposition to this day.
If I went to jail, at least I wouldn't have to sign autographs.
