The Hendrix
We want our sound to go into the soul of the audience, and see if it can awaken some little thing in their minds... 'Cause there are so many sleeping people.
The godfather of dramatically styled guitar playing, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the art of manipulating his sound through feedback and distortion to create an entirely new, groundbreaking style that changed rock music forever after. Hendrix's personality was magnetic and his charisma palpably undeniable - whether he was lighting his guitar on fire, pushing the boundaries of transcendent hallucinogenic exploration with his staggering intake of LSD, or humbly deflecting the heaps of praise lavished on him by the media and his legions of fans, Hendrix was without peer in terms of his lasting impact.
Raised in Seattle, teenaged Hendrix ran into trouble with the law time and again, eventually being offered the choice between Army service and prison. Electing to serve with the 101st Airborne instead of enduring a jail term for joyriding in stolen cars, creating music was Hendrix's escape from the harsh military atmosphere.
Moving to Tennessee after his discharge from the Army, Hendrix took up with a band and began to make a name for himself as a guitarist. Hendrix became known for his unorthodox style and brilliant showmanship as much as his skill. Incapable of being ordinary, Hendrix mystified and thrilled crowds when played his guitar with his teeth. Being left-handed, Hendrix opted to string and play a right handed guitar upside down rather than a guitar designed for a southpaw. Hendrix was nothing if not exceptional.
In Jimi Hendrix, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame believes we have "arguably the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music." Given his lasting legacy and the adoration that still surrounds him, it's safe to say that the world has been inclined to agree.
Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.
